Join The Playhouse Artitude: Climate, Culture & Circularity Project for a fun-filled day of activity in celebration of the humble apple.

With storytelling, family arts and crafts drop-ins, talks and demos on cooking with and fermenting apples, music, a chance to make your own apple juice, and a special film screening, it’ll be a harvest celebration not to be missed! 

 

PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITY

 

HARVEST SPRITES: CHILDREN’S ART WORKSHOP

ECO-BASE

11:30 TO 12:30

Create your own harvest sprite using clay and foraged materials to celebrate the bounty of nature during this family-friendly, sustainable arts & crafts drop-in with Anann’s Arch.

Suitable for ages 4+


FORAGING & FERMENTING WITH APPLES 

AMPHITHEATRE

11:30 - 13:30

Join Clare, forager and curious recipe explorer from Feasting on Weeds to learn all about making the most out of our most precious local seasonal produce - apples! Clare will lead a talk on how apples have been important to our food culture and will demonstrate how to get the most out of the glut through fermentation and capture that special autumnal flavour in other delicious ways. There will be opportunities to taste some freshly pressed apple juice and try some of Clare's creations too.

Please note, the amphitheatre is a covered outdoor venue, please dress warmly.

HARVEST STORYTELLING FOR CHILDREN & FAMILIES

FAIRY FORT

Sit with internationally renowned storyteller Janice Witherspoon as she weaves together entertaining family story sessions inspired by the folklore and traditions of apple harvest season.

WILLOW WANDS: CHILDREN’S ART WORKSHOP

Decorate a wand made from the Willow tree, and use it to spread positivity during this family-friendly, sustainable arts & crafts drop-in with Anann’s Arch.

APPLE PRESSING: MAKE YOUR OWN APPLE JUICE!

Make the most of the Playtrail’s apple harvest and try your hand at some tasty fun, making apple juice using traditional hand press techniques, 

Suitable for ages 6+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

FILM SCREENING: APPLES IN WINTER

AMPHITHEATRE

Join us for this exclusive screening of Apples In Winter, a film produced by Tommy Hayes celebrating the Irish Apple, and showcasing the best of traditional music, song and contemporary dance. Performed by renowned artists including Tommy Hayes of Stockton’s Wing, Karen Casey, Cindy Cummins, Michelle Mulcahy, Mick O Brien, Carl Corcoran and Mary Francis Keenan, Apples in Winter includes a backdrop of a 60 minute film showing the turning of the seasons through the growth of apple trees. Apples have long held a special place in Irish life and mythology. This is captured in a beautifully shot film by Fergus Tighe, Keith Walsh and Martin McGagh which provides a backdrop to tell the story of these apples through music, song, dance and film.

Join Derry singer-songwriter and musician Conor O’Kane for a set of folk and country-blues tinged song and story inspired by love for the land, nature, and most importantly, the apple.
