Theatre of Witness Project goes to Brussels

Posted on: 28th January 2013

The Playhouse Theatre of Witness project has been prestigiously selected by the Special EU Programmes Body to showcase their work at the International Peace Conference ‘Bringing Divided Communities Together' in Brussels on January 31, 2013.

Teya Sepinuck the Creative Director, and James Greer a performer from the first theatre of Witness in Northern Ireland ‘We carried Your Secrets', will give first-hand accounts of the project and their experiences and three film excerpts from previous work will be featured.

The project will present to a delegation of over 270 TD's, Northern Irish Ministers including The First Minister and Deputy First Minister, Minister Brendan Howlin T.D. a number of international Ambassadors and various representatives from the European Union.

The conference will highlight how EU supported projects have helped to reinforce peace and stability within Northern Ireland and the Border Region of Ireland. Johannes Hahn, the EU Commissioner for Regional Policy, came to Derry-Londonderry for the official opening of the Peace Bridge in June 2011. During this ceremony he was introduced to the Theatre of Witness approach, and was so impressed that he invited the project to Brussels.

Theatre of Witness gives voice to those whose stories have not been heard in society. In this form of theatre, true life stories, performed by the people themselves are shared onstage so that audiences can collectively bear witness to issues of suffering, redemption and social justice.

"It is a great honor to have been invited to represent the important work that PEACE III is funding in Northern Ireland. We hope that delegates attending will be as inspired and moved as our audience members have been" project co-ordinator Emma Stuart said.

The Theatre of Witness project is supported by the European Union's PEACE III Programme managed for the Special EU Programmes Body by the Community Relations Council/Pobal Consortium.
