Foster play opens to packed houses and standing ovations!

The story of legendary American songwriter Stephen Collins Foster was brought to life this week as a new play about his life opened at The Playhouse.

Regarded as America's first professional song-writer Foster penned some of its earliest and most famous songs, including ‘camptown races', ‘Oh! Susanna',

‘Hard Times Come Again No More', ‘Old Folks at Home' (‘Swanee River'), ‘My Old Kentucky Home' and ‘Beautiful Dreamer'

His life story, ‘Kind Hearts and Gentle People' by Peter McDonald opened to packed audiences, singing, standing ovations and rapturous applause at The Playhouse on Wednesday night. The show will run until Saturday (October 15) before an extensive tour of Northern Ireland and Donegal.

Foster, who was regarded as America's first professional song-writer, has been lauded by bob Dylan as a master songwriter, and had his songs covered by Al Jolson, Bing Crosby, James Taylor, Bruce Springsteen and Mary Black.

Writer Peter McDonald said he was overwhelmed with the response to the play.

"I'm just delighted with the really warm response we've received" he said.

"Everyone has worked so hard to make sure this play was a success, not just in terms of entertaining audiences, but also to celebrate and publicize the achievements of a very talented man. Many people will be familiar with his work, but not many know about the man himself, or his local ancestry! It's something we can be very proud of!"

Kind Hearts and Gentle People; The Life of Stephen Collins Foster will run until Saturday night at 8pm at The Playhouse before starting it's Northern Irish tour.

Tickets are £11/ £8, and can be bought by clicking here or through The playhouse Box Office on (028)71 268027.
