Monday 13 to Saturday 18 May
As anticipation mounts for The Playhouse's next production for 2013- a brand new commission from Gary Mitchell- John and Damian O'Neill have begun work with the cast for the original score.
The two brothers and members of The mighty Undertones met with the cast of ‘Re-energize' this week to begin work on several new songs, penned especially for the May production.
‘Re-energize' is set thirty years after The Playhouse's production of Mitchell's ‘Energy' in 1999, where a wannabe punk band rehearsed, bickered and tried to get their act together for that all-important first gig.
And now actors Jo Donnelly, Michael Liebmann, Gavin Pedan, Niomi Liberante, and James Doran will join original cast members from the 1999 production, Chris Corrigan and Andy Moore, for the sequel production- which runs from Monday 13 to Saturday 18 May.
The wonderful mix of new and original cast members will be directed by Conall Morrison, whose work has been produced around the world, much of it at the Abbey Theatre, and most recently, he directed ‘La Traviata' for the English National Opera and ‘The Taming of The Shrew' for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
"The original production of ‘Energy' reflected the punk era, in a very vivid and real way, and showed the machinations of a band as they quarrel about their act with ‘The Troubles' and the hunger strikes ominously in the background" Pauline Ross at The Playhouse said.
"Now, set thirty years on, ‘Re-energize reunites these men., now aged in their fifties and with various broken marriages, depressions, drug debts to paramilitaries behind them. They come together again to do one last gig to prove to themselves, their communities, each other, their annoying teenage children that they could have been somebody, they could have lived dream lives."
"We're honoured and humbled to have so any heavyweights of theatre and music in our midst to help bring this story of music to life"
‘Re-energize' will run at The Playhouse from Monday 13 to Saturday 18 May. Tickets are £14/ £10 and are available from The Playhouse Box Office on (028)71268027 or online at www.derryplayhouse.co.uk.
