The Playhouse's powerful and provocative ‘Over the Wire' by Seamas Keenan has sold out The MAC Belfast as praise rolls in from national press, politicians, and public bodies.
Receiving national attention as "a gritty and stylish piece of theatre from Derry's Playhouse" (The Sunday Times), the play has now packed out Belfast's newest arts venue, selling out hours after its opening night on Tuesday (10 February).
The story of five men's fight for survival in Long Kesh prison in 1974 was welcomed as "dark and challenging" by Alliance Councillor Emmet McDonough Brown, and praised for its "powerful script" and "commanding performances" by Gilly Campbell, Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
Five men battle against a world of violence, paranoia and hunger as they struggle against British soldiers, each other and their own personal demons in the piece, which was met with critical acclaim, welcomed as an "impressive calling card" from the city (The Scotsman), when it launched the 2013 programme of events for Derry~ Londonderry's Playhouse.
Originally directed by BAFTA award winning director Kenny Glenaan, whose newest work, ‘Citizen Charlie' a drama about Charles Haughey, recently showed on RTE, the piece has hit the road again under the direction of Playhouse Producer and Director Kieran Griffiths.
The show will run until Saturday (14 February) at The MAC, Belfast, following last month's visit to the Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin.
"With the help of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Arts Council of Ireland Touring Fund, we were just delighted to bring this gritty political drama back to a wider audience, and the response from local and national press to its return has been just phenomenal" Producer and Director Kieran Griffiths said.
"We wanted to showcase the very real tangible legacy created by 2013, platforming the important artistic contribution that was made in this city, the talent, the celebration, the debate, the purposeful inquiry, and the important artistic response to our past."
'Over The Wire' by Seamas Keenan will run at MAC, Belfast until Saturday (14 February).
