By Berni Kerr
Single mother Gwen is an open-minded, liberal feminist. With her lifelong friend Maggie, she's actively involved in a steady succession of protests aimed at putting the world to rights. Until.... something happens to change her world.

Produced and directed by Patricia Byrne, Berni Kerr's gripping drama explores the journey of a transgender man from a mother's perspective. It charts with empathy, incisiveness and dark humour the impact on their friends and family circle, and the support that is available. It also touches on the mental health care system.

"She Wants to be a What? tells an important message in a human, relatable way teaching us of the complexities of such a subject whilst also underlining the need for more conversation around it." - Derry Journal

Sole Purpose Productions is a multi award award winning theatre company that has toured extensively in Ireland, the UK and the USA.

This project is supported by the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland through the Social Justice Small Grants Programme.

A Q&A with members of the transgender community will no longer take place after this performance. We apologise for any inconvenience.

Technical information about watching our shows online

How does it work?

A streaming link and password will be sent by email to watch this show. If you haven’t received the email before the performance or event, first check your junk folders, then contact us at

How many tickets do I need to book?
For all of our online events you only need to book once per household - you and your household can watch on as many devices as you wish. However we would ask that you consider how many members of your household might want to watch together and, if you are able to, add a donation to your purchase to support us in this difficult time.

Please be aware that our system does not support 'gifting' theatre tickets to friends just yet (we will soon!). In the meantime, please consider making sure households book separately so streaming link and passwords are sent to each correct household via separate emails.

What about watching back?
If you have purchased a stream and keep or a donation ticket a separate code will be sent to you by email after the show so you can also watch the performance back on demand for 7 days. Please note, shows are unavailable for approx two hours after live broadcast while it is being transcoded. We appreciate your patience during that time.

Can I pause or rewind the live event?

Watching our events live online is like watching a theatre performance in person, so you won’t be able to rewind a live stream broadcast if you arrive late. If you choose to pause, when playing is resumed you will automatically skip ahead to the current moment in the performance (rather than from the point you paused).
If you have booked to watch back, once the live event has finished and the recording has been processed you will be able to catch up and watch the performance again with the options to pause and rewind.

Who can I talk to if I'm having trouble?

Please do not ring our usual Box Office number, as we are currently closed to the public. For technical support on the night contact instead.
