Good Relations Week 2022 will deliver a positive message that ‘Change Starts With Us’ as we shine a light on local communities taking action to build a stronger shared society and a more sustainable future.
 
The Playhouse will deliver tours, workshops and an exhibition to celebrate the focus on the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to highlight the political, social, economic, and environmental challenges we face as a region. It will also demonstrate how good community relationships are fundamental to enabling us to work together to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.

Roots- Playhouse Tours

Thursday 22 September, 1pm & 5pm

The Playhouse will open its famous red doors for fun packed tours.

The award winning Playhouse, as featured on BBC Restoration, is housed in two 'B1' listed buildings, which were former Sister of Mercy Primary Schools dating back to 1887 and 1911.

Unusual features include a unique wooden cobbled entrance (the only other wooden cobbles in Ireland are at Trinity College), and bizarre hinge/sash windows. 

Refurbished at a cost of £4.6 million, winner of the UK BURA Award 2009, and finalist of BBC Restoration 2004, The Playhouse is well worth a visit.

Roots- An Exhibition

Monday 19-Thursday 22 September

In the 30 years since it opened The Playhouse has gone on a remarkable journey to become one of the most vibrant and loved arts centres in Northern Ireland.

This exhibition is a snapshot of those years, featuring letters of support from a who's who of prominent cultural figures, archive video, original artworks, props and costumes.

SOWING THE SEEDS

Cross-border networking along ‘the western-corridor’

Monday 19 September

The Playhouse, Derry Londonderry in partnership with The Glens Centre, North Leitrim is hosting a networking meeting, bringing together 10-20 theatre-makers/ practitioners engaged with local communities in the northern western border region of NI and ROI. The meeting will enable new cross-border connections and create an opportunity to explore shared interests around further cross-border working and deepening understandings around working across cultural north/south contexts and audiences. (The event is also supported by The Glens Centre, Across the Lines IFI programme, Leitrim County Council).

 

Theatre of Witness workshops

Wednesday 21 September, 2-4pm

The individuals involved in The Playhouse Theatre of Witness Project have been working together over the past ten years using their produced theatre pieces as an educational resource in workshops, providing participants from both sides of the divide with real life stories documenting the history of the Troubles from key players. Theatre of Witness Workshops explores the power of storytelling as a healing, empowering and transformative tool providing a pathway to peace and reconciliation.

Street Talk Workshops

Vintage Theatre Poster Printing Workshops

Poster Printing Workshops as part of Good Relations Week, also celebrating the 30th Anniversary of the Playhouse.

Thursday 22 September

These old-style poster printing workshops are part of Good Relations Week. The Playhouse are hosting workshops for two school groups and two older peoples’ groups. The participants will learn how to hand-print and take home their own old style fine art poster. 

It will also be an opportunity for the older groups to reminisce and share any stories and memories they may have of The Playhouse.

Perma-Culture Night at The Playhouse

Walled City Gifts & Coffee, 9 Artillery Street, 5pm-7pm

Join The Playhouse's Artitude: Climate, Culture & Circularity Project for 'Perma-Culture Night', a fun evening of free climate themed arts & growing workshops. You can find us outside Walled City Gifts & Coffee from 5pm to 7pm as we take over Artillery Street with plant-potting workshops, permaculture-themed events and eco-friendly, recycled arts activities for the whole family to enjoy! Come along to hear all about The Playhouse's new community garden which is opening next Spring, meet permaculture design expert Joanne Butler of Ourganic Gardens, and make art for your garden with Anna Barclay of Eco-Art on Butcher Street. See you there!
