Through Artskills, The Playhouse offered an innovative approach to literacy training, by using the arts as an alternative medium to develop literacy skills. The Literacy curriculum encompasses the following Core Elements - Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.
Artskills provided young people with the opportunity to participate in creative training that will enhance their literacy ability. This innovative approach is an opportunity for them to develop skills and interests whilst engaging in meaningful, social and creative activity. The Playhouse ensured that all participants are signposted towards additional training and opportunities to further develop skills and interests in the arts.
The Artskills Project's main aim was to help young people who are interested in developing their literacy skills and obtaining recognised qualifications. The project therefore aimed to 'reduce inactivity' by improving the employability of young people.
Over the 3 years the project aimed to engage with 370 young people throughout the Northwest and enhance self confidence and self esteem in our participants, enabling them to improve their literacy levels in a fun and accessible way. The successful completion of the project led to the attainment of 6 UK recognised qualifications.
The Playhouse provides a neutral, creative, non-formal and safe learning environment that attracts individuals who have not achieved their full potential through formal educational systems. The alternative arts-based training that we deliver is recognised as being an effective way of developing essential skills.
In 2014 The Playhouse Artskills project received a prestigious award from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL).
The Claire's Award celebrates and recognises achievement in the promotion of learning and tackling disadvantage throughout Northern Ireland.
The Playhouse Artskills project came first in the Award's Community Impact Category.
