The Playhouse x An Grianan Theatre

Border Lines

A joint playwriting initiative between The Playhouse, Derry and An Grianan Theatre, Letterkenny, connecting early to mid career writers from across the North West and celebrating the region's storytelling tradition.

The Cohort

Open to writers on both sides of the border

An open call assembles a wider group of early to mid career writers from Derry and Donegal. Every cohort member takes part in the full programme of workshops, masterclasses and industry sessions.

The Programme

Applications close 7 August · Begins 28 August 2026

Opening with a three day cohort meeting and workshop intensive from 28 to 30 August. Group meetings that build community across the border, craft workshops and masterclasses led by experienced playwrights, and industry sessions covering funding and career development on both sides.

The Ambition

A lasting North West community

To grow a long-standing, productive community of writers and theatre-makers rooted in the shared identity of Derry and Donegal, one that outlasts this programme and endures.

In Honour of Our Founder

The Pauline Ross Playwriting Bursaries

At the heart of Border Lines sit two seed commissions, named for Pauline Ross, founder of The Playhouse, in recognition of her enduring commitment to creating new work in the North West.

Two bursaries, €5,000 / £4,275 each, awarded to a writer or writing team to work towards the first draft of a new piece.

The Commissions

Awarded to a writer or writing team of no more than two, to develop a first draft play of up to 60 minutes.

Language & Identity

One commissioned play will be bilingual, reflecting the living linguistic heritage of the Donegal Gaeltacht and the wider North West.

The Pathway

Both plays culminate in an informal reading, organised by The Playhouse and presented to sector leaders. Both plays will be championed for further development, either in the North West or elsewhere.
