Derry woman Laura Dunne, who has been living in London and Dublin for the past 10 years, is returning to her native city next weekend (20th August) to present a dance workshop in The Playhouse, Artillery Street.
But this is a dance workshop like no other. Laura is the only dancer in Ireland with the internationally recognised American Tribal Style (ATS) belly dance teaching certification and her unique workshop will focus on ATS.
With over 7 years experience in tribal belly dance, Laura, who uses the stage name Lauramaeve, is currently teaching the ATS style in Dublin in her dance school ‘Speak from the Hip' where it is fast becoming the latest dance craze.
Participants in The Playhouse workshop will learn a selection of slow and fast movements that can be used to develop individual routines. They will also hear something about the culture of ATS. Laura will display some examples of ATS costuming and will give some short performances to illustrate this beautiful and earthy dance style.
Laura is delighted to be coming home to present ATS to a Derry audience.
"I've been wanting to do this for a long time and I'm so pleased it's all finally coming together. I can't wait to see my fellow Derry women shaking their hips, feeling the music, and generally having fun! This is a beginner friendly workshop and it's not necessary to have any dance experience. Just put on some loose clothing, come along and go for it!"
Laura is hoping that if this workshop is well received, she will be able to set up regular classes in the city.
"I'm living in Dublin now with my partner, Mark, and our 20 month old son, Darragh, so regular classes here will be a great excuse to come home more often!" said Laura.
The Playhouse workshop is on Saturday 20th August from 10.30am - 4.30pm and costs £35. Booking is recommended to secure a place though you can pay at the door if there are places available. Email firstname.lastname@example.org for further details and check out her website at www.bellydance.ie.
