A hard hitting piece of collaborative work between the PSNI, artists and young people from Magherafelt will be screened this month.
A showcase of work by a brand new Playhouse Youth Art Project, ‘The Ending??' is a community focused animation created by the young people of Leckagh Drive Estate and Glenburn Park in Magherafelt.
The work, which will be screened on Tuesday May 28, explores the common story of a drug dealer and the negative effects of his behaviour on the wider community.
Chief Inspector Sam Donaldson, Area Commander explains the background to the project:
"Drugs can have a significant impact on communities, and the associated behaviour can affect all age groups. Drug taking can lead to dependency issues, which in turn can impact on crime levels as individuals resort to stealing to fund their addiction. When people have taken drugs it changes how they behave, which can in turn lead to anti-social behaviour or even lead to criminal damage.
"Through developing this animation, young people were given an opportunity to look at the drugs issue, from a range of viewpoints. How it can affect an individual, how it can affect families, the legal implications and also from a police perspective, who drugs supply can be linked to organised crime gangs."
Created by The Playhouse, the project involved participants in a series of workshops with professional artists.
Idan Meir, theatre director, writer and co-founder of Combatants for Peace (CFP) Forum Theatre Group (a theatre group that aims to build a bridge between cross border communities through Forum Theatre) worked with young people on methods of the famous theatrical form, Theatre of the Oppressed. Derry~Londonderry filmmaker Chris McAlinden then worked with the group to animate the story.
Commenting on the benefits of the project Elaine Forde, Project Co-ordinator, The Playhouse, said:
"In an attempt to help young people understand community policing better ‘The Ending??' project has created a unique a space for young people to address community issues face to face with their neighbourhood PSNI officers".
The free screening will take place on Tuesday May 28 from 7-8pm at The Terrace Hotel, Magherafelt. Refreshments will be served. To attend contact Elaine Forde at The Playhouse on (028)71268027.
