A brand new dance class exploring the dancing style of World War II, including the foxtrot and jitterbug, will start this month at the Beech Hill Hotel.
The classes are part of a series of special events being held by The Beech Hill Country house Hotel and The Playhouse to mark 70 year anniversary of the US Navy and Marines arrival in Derry.
Sunday marked the first phenomenally successful anniversary event in conjunction with National Trails Day. More than 1,000 people attended an afternoon in celebration, exploration and reminiscence at the Base One Europe-The Beech Hill Camp on Sunday (October 7).
And now local dance tutor Louise McElhinney will hold four weeks of classes exploring the dance styles of the wartime years every Thursday from 7pm to 9pm.
Starting on Thursday 18th October, the four classes are £3 and are open to all as the perfect way to get in the mood for the 70th anniversary Marine Ball, being held at The Beech Hill on Saturday November 10.
Former marines from the United States will attend the special Anniversary Ball, which will feature a special appearance from Eleanor Roosevelt.
"When we started these series of special events in honour of the 70th anniversary of the US Navy and Marines arrival in this city, the most important thing for us was to bring to life this extraordinary period in local history for local people" Pauline Ross, Founder and Director at The Playhouse said.
"The unprecedented turnout and extremely positive response from all involved in Sunday's activities was better than we could ever have imagined! It just highlighted the huge appetite that exists here in the city for the stories and memories of times gone by.
"These classes are just another fun way that people can explore and learn about the wartime years, find out how people living through World War II danced, laughed and prepared for their own Balls of the time!"
For more information people can contact The Playhouse (028)71268027. Anyone interested in booking for the Marine Ball on Saturday November 10 can contact The Beech Hill on (028)7134 9279. Tickets are £25.
Private First Class Marine Joe Jones (local actor Kieran Griffiths) dances with Irish American Hollywood starlet Peggy Diggins (Rionach McGlinchey), sweetheart to the American Forces overseas. Accompanying them is their dance tutor Louise McElhinney. Joe Jones and Peggy Diggins both made appearances at the phenomenally successful National Trails Day event at the Base One Europe-The Beech Hill Camp on Sunday (October 7).
