Taking the Fear Out of Shakespeare!

Pre - Audition ‘Titus Andronicus' workshop

Saturday 23 March, 2013

An award winning Shakespeare actor, fresh from the West End, will hold a pre- audition workshop ahead of The Playhouse's most ambitious 2013 production, ‘Titus Andronicus'.

Veteran actor Liam Brennan has extensive experience performing Shakespeare on the West End, and will take up lead role in ‘Twelfth Night' on Broadway later this year.

In a unique opportunity for local actors Liam will ‘Take the Fear Out of Shakespeare' at a free workshop on Saturday 23 March.

Directed by BAFTA award winning director Kenny Glenaan, ‘Titus Andronicus' will open at The Playhouse in September.

The Shakespeare blockbuster will be performed by a sixteen strong cast of professional and local, emerging non-professional actors. Twelve male and female roles will be cast locally with actors between the ages of 17 and 60, working alongside the cream of the crop.

Ahead of open auditions for the roles, local performers will be offered the chance to train with Liam at the workshop.

Liam Brennan is an actor with extensive experience performing Shakespeare at Shakespeare's Globe, The Apollo Theatre, and the Royal Lyceum Edinburgh to name a few. He has also undertaken two of Globe Theatre's American touring productions, Shakespeare's ‘Measure for Measure' and ‘Edward II/ Richard II'.

He has also donned the roles of Iago, Bassanio and in many leading classical and modern roles in prestigious theatres across the country. He has received the prestigious Critic's Award for Theatre in Scotland for Best Actor for his role in ‘Tales from Hollywood' with Perth Theatre.

Set during the latter days of the Roman Empire, Shakespeare's bloodiest play ‘Titus Andronicus' tells the fictional story of Titus, a general in the Roman army, who is engaged in a vicious cycle of revenge with Tamora, Queen of the Goths.

A key highlight of The Playhouse's 2013 programme, the play will be re-imagined in contemporary Northern Ireland, under the direction of BAFTA award winning Director Kenny Glenaan. The play will premiere at The Playhouse on Monday 23 September and run until Saturday 28.

"This is a very special opportunity for local emerging actors to train under an expert Shakespeare actor and then be seen by a BAFTA award winning Director, who it's worth mentioning, will be filming in the city next year!" Kieran Griffiths, Playhouse 2013 theatre producer said.

"We are not just looking to take the fear out of Shakespeare, we will show how easy it is to deliver it! There is a formula in Shakespeare plays. The genesis of nearly all modern stories can be traced back to Shakespeare. The power of Shakespeare, and the power of the ability to play a Shakespeare role, cannot be underestimated. That's when we start to look at the legacy of 2013 for local performers from this city, providing them with invaluable skills and training, for free!"

The workshop on Saturday 23 March from 10am- 5pm is free and open to all. Booking is essential. Actors will be given a piece to perform. To book contact Kieran Griffiths on (028)71268027 or email kieran@derryplayhouse.co.uk
