Money lenders, custody battles and whether the Ramones invented punk rock...
The Playhouse will bring Gary Mitchell's world of punk to life once more as his latest play, specially commissioned by The Playhouse Derry~Londonderry for City of Culture 2013, tours to The Lyric Belfast!
The internationally recognized playwright ‘re-energized' the story of a failing punk band with the help of two Undertones, John and Damian O'Neill, for 2013 in May.
Directed by Abbey theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company theatre director Conall Morrison, ‘Re-Energize' peaks into a garage in Rathcoole estate in Belfast, where a wannabe band practice and bicker, escaping through music from the harsh realities of loansharks, broken marriages and alcoholism.
A sequel to Mitchell's original commission for The Playhouse in 1999 ‘Energy', where the band tried to get together for their first ever gig, ‘Re-energize' is set 30 years later, as the misfit members re-unite to do one last gig to prove to themselves, each other, their annoying teenage children that they could have been somebody...
With original live music composed by the O'Neill brothers, The Playhouse production cranked the volume up to the max to packed houses in May, and the show will now begin a two week run at The Lyric from September 10 to 21.
The piece is one of few plays commissioned for the City of Culture programme to tour outside of Derry~Londonderry, following the storming success of the Glasgow tour of Seamas Keenan, ‘Over The Wire' by The Playhouse in May.
"‘Re-Energize's loud punk premier in May was a reunion for some original cast members Chris Corrigan and Andy Moore, and a professional debut for others" Pauline Ross at The Playhouse said.
"This lovely mix keeps with the truly universal and timeless nature of really good music! It's not just for those who can dust off their original punk jackets! Gary's unflinching and resolute writing also deals head on with everyday universal themes the resonate to anyone battling with financial desperation and hardship. The music is a lifeline for these musicians, an escape and a getaway."
The Playhouse production of ‘Re-Energize' by Gary Mitchell will run at The Lyric Theatre from September 10 to 21. Tickets are £15/ £12 and are available from The Lyric Box Office on (028)90 381081 or online at www. lyrictheatre.co.uk.
"taut, tense and intelligent... Played and sung live, with the volume cranked up to the max, it sounds, well, magic" Jane Coyle, Irish Theatre Magazine
