Premieres, exhibition launches and international conferences- all in one night!

Posted on: 24th May 2011

The Playhouse has played host to three major events in the city- including a world Premiere, an exhibition launch and an international conference- and all in one night!

The Playhouse's red carpet was rolled out on Thursday night for the official opening of Seamus Keenan's new play ‘Star Men', the launch of an exhibition by local author and humanitarian Don Mullan, and for more than 60 guests and speakers from The playhouse International Cultural Arts Network (ICAN) conference.

Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness was among several politicians, dignitaries and officials to attend the premiere of ‘Star Men' on Thursday (May 19), and the groundbreaking new play was received with standing ovations and rapturous applause.

On the same night the Deputy First Minister also opened the exhibition ‘A Thousand Reasons for living' by bestselling author, humanitarian and media producer Don Mullan, the first exhibition in the world by an amateur photographer based entirely using a mobile phone.

The exhibition and play were also attended by guests, speakers, artists and practitioners taking part in ICAN's innovative two-day conference examining the integration and ethics of socially engaged arts practice. International consultant on the empowerment of women, Barbara J. Love, Head of Playwriting at Brown University Erik Ehn, and renowned Professor and Director James Thompson were just some of several speakers at the international conference, which was held at An Grianan Theatre and the Regional Cultural Centre in Letterkenny, County Donegal.

"To say this has been an extraordinary week for The Playhouse is a massive understatement!" Niall McCaughan, general manager at The Playhouse said.

"To have three such exceptional and groundbreaking events happening in our building at the one time is just superb. It really is a tribute to the wide range of internationals and local cultural events happening around us every day!"
