New production directed by Conall Morrison with music composed by John and Dmian O'Neill of The Undertones
The Playhouse will this month hold open auditions for their latest commission for City of Culture 2013.
Written by one of Northern Ireland's leading playwrights Gary Mitchell, ‘Re-energize' is set thirty years after ‘Punk-tastic' success of The Playhouse's production of Mitchell's ‘Energy', where a wannabe punk band rehearsed, bickered and tried to get their act together for that all-important first gig.
Now with original music composed by John and Damian O'Neill, and under the direction of the highly esteemed Conall Morrison, the band members re-unite to do one last gig.
Gary Mitchell is one of Northern Ireland's leading playwrights, described by the Guardian as "one of the most talked about voices in European theatre ... whose political thrillers have arguably made him Northern Ireland's greatest playwright".
He has now teamed up with esteemed theatre director Conall Morrison, whose work has been produced around the world. Much of his work has been at the Abbey Theatre, and most recently, he directed La Traviata for the English National Opera and The Taming of The Shrew for the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The Playhouse is now recruiting male and female actors with a playing age of 16 to 20 to complete the all important cast for the production, which will run in The Playhouse from Monday 13- Saturday18 May.
"Gary Mitchell first wrote ‘Energy' for The Playhouse in 1997" Playhouse Theatre Producer Kieran Griffiths said.
"It was set in the early eighties against the backdrop of the hunger strikes, and was a powerful and striking portrayal of the punk movement at the time. And now, in their fifties, the band have re-united, with various broken marriages, depressions, drug debts to paramilitaries behind them, to do one last gig to prove to themselves.
"It's a great story, and we're delighted to have a really strong team behind us for it, including the sterling music, to help us tell it!"
Auditions for ‘Re-energize' will be held in the Crescent Arts Centre in Belfast on Saturday March 16 from 10am- 4pm. Male must have basic guitar or drumming skills. To confirm a place email firstname.lastname@example.org.
