Undoubtedly one of the end of year highlights and biggest audiences of over 2 million from across the British Isles and further a field, was the Live BBC Radio 4 Broadcast from The Playhouse.
The BBC flagship programme "Broadcasting House" was broadcast on Sunday 30th December, and was presented by Paddy O'Connell. The programme covered key themes in the news, a review of the Sunday newspapers, a discussion about City of Culture and a specially commissioned radio play from Dave Duggan. The all star lineup included Amanda Burton, Bronagh Gallagher, Allan Wright, Gerry Robinson, Anita Robinson, Dave Dugan, Mark Patterson and Sean Rafferty to name but a few, as well as a great audience.
Niall Mc Caughan, CEO of The Playhouse stated: "We were delighted that The Playhouse again played a major part in the end of 2012 celebrations and a taster of 2013. The presenter Paddy O'Connell was so taken with the turnout on a Sunday morning, that upon entering the theatre stage, took a photograph of the audience and immediately "tweeted" it! It was a great experience for all who attended, and will be the start of many live broadcasts from the iconic building over the next 12 months.
In the run up to Christmas our building was very very busy, and our 2013 packed programme will certainly continue to invest and showcase in the great local talent we have in our city. 2013 will be a great year for the city and the region, but as The Playhouse stated back in 2006, a City of Culture was an aspiration, but Derry has and already is a City Of Culture, and will continue to be a City of Culture for many years and decades to come."
