Field Day returns to The Playhouse to stage the world premiere of a new play for Derry by internationally acclaimed American stage and screen writer Sam Shepard, in which he gives a distinctive and compelling take on the Oedipus story.
As a young man Oedipus is told by a seer that he will grow up to kill his own father and marry his mother. He flees from home to avoid this terrible fate but there is no escape and the dreadful prophecy finally catches up with him. Writer Sam Shepard re-imagines this Ancient Greek tale as a modern thriller. A murder is commited. Who is the victim? Who is responsible? What are the consequences for generations to come? There are many versions of the crime in this intriguing tale, told with live music composed by Neil Martin. People are hiding from the truth, even when it stares them in the face.
In a career spanning nearly 50 years, Sam Shepard has gained the critical regard, media attention, and iconic status enjoyed by only a rare few in American theatre. His stage work includes classics such as ‘Buried Child', ‘True West' and ‘A Lie of the Mind', along with screenplays such as ‘Paris, Texas' and ‘Fool for Love'.
This unique collaboration of theatre greats includes Nancy Meckler, former Artistic Director of Shared Experience who now directs regularly with the Royal Shakespeare Company, and Stephen Rea, one of Ireland's most accomplished actors on stage and screen.

"[Shepard] pulls the Oedipus legend up by its roots, fits it with earthy new poetry, straddles it between comedy and tragedy, and splinters characters and time frames to construct an eternal dilemma"**** The Irish Times
"Derry's most significant theatrical event...Don't mug an innocent person in the street to steal their ticket for the Field Day production of 'A Particle of Dread' at The Playhouse... Short of that, do what it takes" Derry Journal

The upcoming Lumiere Festival in Derry~Londonderry will take place from Nov 28-Dec 1, and customers attending performances at The Playhouse on these nights are asked to please allow more time for your journey.
There are no installations on Artillery Street itself, however there are 8 installations in the surrounding area, including one in the Carlisle Car Park, so we do expect it to be busier than usual and it is likely that journeys will take a little longer.
